History

The inaugural Handloggers Half was run on Labour Day weekend in 2014. Five hardy runners started from the Snug Cove ferry dock and set out through Crippen Park towards Killarney Lake, looped around Mt Gardner via the historic and scenic Handloggers Trail and back “across the rock” via the Mid Island Trail to Snug Cove.

In 2015, things got serious! The second Handloggers Half on September 5 put a real buzz in the air for the 65+ runners and supporters of the event’s “official debut”. We had a beautiful day of sunshine and perfect conditions on the trails with a glorious finish along the causeway in the Cove with mountain and ocean views.

Since then the race has continued to capture the hearts and legs of trail runners looking for a homegrown experience with beautiful, challenging terrain. The 2018 event saw over 100 runners toeing the line, and more than 30 volunteers across three aid stations.

Over five years we’ve also been delighted to support two charities that are close to our hearts as race directors: Bowen Island Trail Society and Akili Preparatory School. Thank you for supporting our race and the causes we run for! Find out more about our charities here.
